Trincomalee, often called 'Trinco,' is a tender port located on the east coast of Sri Lanka. This port town of approximately 100,000 residents is built on a peninsula, featuring one of the world's largest natural deep-water harbors on one side and picturesque white-sand beaches on the other. It serves as an excellent gateway to explore the region's historical and natural beauty, including the famous Koneswaram temple perched on Swami Rock and the inviting Indian Ocean beaches perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Getting Around from the Port

Trincomalee is a very compact town, making walking a suitable way to explore the immediate area. For destinations further afield, rickshaws are readily available on nearly every corner. While exploring, it's worth comparing independent options with any cruise line tours offered for the area.

Safety

When snorkeling, especially around Pigeon Island, exercise great caution due to areas that can be extremely deep (up to 1000 meters). Be aware that coral health in some areas is impacted by a lack of local respect.

Currency and Language

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Approximate exchange rates are around 110 LKR per US Dollar or 170 LKR per Euro. ATMs are available in cities and suburbs, particularly at bank branches, but are less common in rural areas. Sinhala, Tamil, and English are widely spoken throughout Sri Lanka, though English proficiency may be limited in very remote villages.
